The maxillary sinus may drain into the mouth via an abnormal opening, an oroantral fistula, a particular risk after tooth extraction.
Oroantral fistula ( OAF ) is an abnormal condition where the maxillary sinus is exposed to the oral cavity through an epithelialised fistula.
Other methods like radiographs ( occipitomental, OPG and periapical views ) can also be used to confirm the presence of any oroantral fistulas.
This is particularly important following the removal of upper wisdom teeth, as their nerve can extend up into the maxillary sinus, and inadequate healing may lead to a permanent oroantral fistula.
